MIDI. Musical instrument digital interface
Wednesday March 18, 2026. 2 hours. Start 19:00
You have been making music on a laptop or with hardware electronic music instruments and you’ve noticed that thing called MIDI. It seems to be the language machines use to talk music. That’s right! This lesson helps you to learn to speak that language.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?
You will get a thorough description of the MIDI protocol and how it’s used in both software and hardware environments. We will talk about the physical forms the interface can take (DIN plug, USB, minijack) and we will discuss possibilities and tools that MIDI provides us (transforming MIDI data, arpeggios, sequences, chord players etc, MPE). We’ll also tell you about the history and the future of the protocol.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
Something that talks MIDI. Normally this would be your laptop with DAW and a synth or drumcomputer/ groove box. It’s probably useful to bring your laptop, we’ll do a couple of exercises.
